Alice Crane – I don’t want to make you feel depressed

An idyllic landscape looking from Devon, across Somerset and Dorset. Lines, scratched out with a knife, reveal red underpaint. The painting was made after interviewing a key worker about County Lines, where young people are manipulated and exploited to act as drug runners. This abuse of power, though hidden and unspoken, deeply affects the lives and prospects of many young people throughout the West Country. The title phrase ran through our conversation.

Whether painting, textiles or digital media, Alice’s work centres on landscape and a sense of place. She has lived in Somerset since 1975 and graduated in 1993 with a BA hons in Fine Art Textiles from Goldsmiths, London.  Alice works with the arts education charity, Somerset Partnerships Arts Education Agency. SPAEDA, which uses creative approaches to enrich learning, inspire joy and build confidence in children and young people.
